This is the sweetest thing we've seen this year.

Angie Thomas broke ground last year with her debut novel, The Hate U Give, a young adult novel that challenges the notion of the experience of black youth when a young girl’s witnesses the senseless death of her best friend at the hands of police authorities. (It’s soon to be a movie, ICYMI!)

Little did she know, her debut novel, which was motivated by departed legendary emcee Tupac Shakur‘s “THUG LIFE” concept as well as the provoking discussions surrounding present-day police brutalities sweeping  our nation, would chart on the New York Times Best Sellers list for more than 45 weeks, debuting at number one upon arrival and earning top praises from the likes of fellow YA favorites John Green and Jason Reynolds.

Twitter surprised the Mississippian author by showing some big love for her on Twitter, thus creating the now-viral hashtag #AngieThomasAppreciationDay. Immediately, fans from all across the world shared personal experiences and their gratitude for Thomas’ contributions to the YA genre, more specifically for bringing the real-life issues of black youth to the forefront of literary conversations where they had not been previously.
