On Thursday (November 30), the Aspen Institute tapped NPR to unveil their longlist for their first-ever Aspen Words Literary Prize for Fiction, which includes authors who released works of fiction this year that “reflect some of society’s most pressing contemporary issues with artistry and humanity.”
Everything from novels to short story collections are eligible for the inaugural prize, for which the five finalists will be revealed in March 2018, and then the winner during a ceremonial announcement taking place in New York City on April 10, 2018. The winner will also receive a $35,000 bonus prize.
Among the panel of jurors are award-winning authors Phil Klay and Akhil Sharma, esteemed writer and sociologist Alondra Nelson and others.
Among the nominees include first-timers Lesley Nneka Arimah, Zinzi Clemmons (What We Lose) and Weike Wang, to two-time National Book Award-winner Jesmyn Ward and last year’s Pulitzer touting novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen, for The Sympathizer.

Salt Houses, Hala Alyan

In “A Human Number,” a man spends his days collect-calling strangers just to hear the sounds of the outside world. In “573543,” an inmate recalls his descent into addiction as his prison softball team gears up for an annual tournament against another unit. In “Leche Quemada,” an inmate is released and finds freedom more complex and baffling then he expected. Dawkins’s stories are funny and sad, filled with unforgettable detail—the barter system based on calligraphy-ink tattoos, handmade cards, and cigarettes; a single dandelion smuggled in from the rec yard; candy made from powdered milk, water, sugar, and hot sauce. His characters are nuanced and sympathetic, despite their obvious flaws.
The Locals, Jonathan Dee
Mark Firth is a contractor and home restorer in Howland, Massachusetts, who feels opportunity passing his family by. After being swindled by a financial advisor, what future can Mark promise his wife, Karen, and their young daughter, Haley? He finds himself envying the wealthy weekenders in his community whose houses sit empty all winter.

The Refugees, Viet Thanh Nguyen
From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her for a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half-sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will, the stories are a captivating testament to the dreams and hardships of immigration.
The Tower of the Antilles, Achy Obejas
In “Supermán,” several possible storylines emerge about a 1950s Havana sex-show superstar who disappeared as soon as the revolution triumphed. “North/South” portrays a migrant family trying to cope with separation, lives on different hemispheres, and the eventual disintegration of blood ties. “The Cola of Oblivion” follows the path of a young woman who returns to Cuba, and who inadvertently uncorks a history of accommodation and betrayal among the family members who stayed behind during the revolution.
