The Prettiest Instagram Snaps of Celeste Ng’s ‘Everything I Never Told You’

Last month, I read Celeste Ng‘s debut novel, Everything I Never Told You, a novel about a family’s crisis that begins and ends with Lydia Lee: the teenage girl discovered dead and afloat in a nearby lake. Ng’s debut is one of wonder, heartbreak and explosive secrets and experiences. In its wholeness, Everything I Never Told You is flooded with insurmountable grief, so much so that I am still trying to muster the correct words to express its collision. I devoured this book as one does a solitary chocolate cake. Please read it. Please.

About Everything I Never Told You:

So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. — Goodreads

This is a quick, engaging, subtle little book. It digs into the intermingling of so many sociocultural roles…gender, sexuality, familial, racial, intellectual, a period piece that is still relevant. I think most impressive is Ng's thoughtful and thought provoking presentation of the development of family, how all of these roles and the ways we do or do not fulfill them, along with the butterfly effect of words and actions that seem insignificant, can have lasting, devastating impact. . . It's something I did not register until recently, so focused on day to day survival, I failed to appreciate how the seemingly small things accumulate, how we bend and shape and mold to them often unknowingly, and suddenly we are unrecognizable. I also remember what it was like to raise children in the shelter of family and community, with the freedom and luxury of support and presumptive confidence in my motherhood. Now shoved rather violently across some parenting and social barriers, I worry constantly about how my status as an other will affect my kids, how what I think and do and say might have lasting impact that I can't conceive of in the present. If you have the luxury of parenting without constant judgment and ridicule, without being torn down and set up to fail, without pervasive anxiety that you are not strong enough to protect your children from the pain that defines you, relish in it. You know privilege. . . . . . . #ashreads #bibliophile #bookworm #everythinginevertoldyou #fiction #whattoread #amreading #bookstagram #books

"Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet." 💫 Everything I Never Told You is about a Chinese-American family in the 1970s and how they deal with the death of Lydia, the middle child who is believed to have the ability to fulfill her parents' dreams. 💫 Even though this book spend certain amount of pages focusing on the mystery of Lydia's death, it also shed light on some themes like racism and gender roles. The characters are complex and we would understand their action even if we may not like it. This book made me understand that the problem that parents enforcing their child to fulfill their dreams is common and it can happened in any family regardless of cultures. It has a vibes that similar to Thirteen Reasons Why (which I didn't like), but the difference is that I was emotionally pulled by this story. I even shed a few tears at the last 40 pages. 💫 Everything I Never Told You is an insightful book and I highly recommend you to check this out. 💫 Rating: 4.5 out of 5⭐️ Recommend to: those who love books about family, and those who love Thirteen Reasons Why

“All their lives Nath had understood, better than anyone, the lexicon of their family, the things they could never truly explain to outsiders: that a book or a dress meant more than something to read or something to wear; that attention came with expectations that—like snow—drifted and settled and crushed you with their weight.” *** Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You was probably the most intense book I have read since A Little Life. Besides other things it is about our secret lives, about unsaid things, about the distance between us and people who live with us and about secrets only siblings can understand. I think it is a very important book that everyone should read. *** #celesteng #everythinginevertoldyou #bookstagram #book #instabook #igreads #kniha #knihomol #vsco #vscobook #vscobooks #bookworm #booklover #bookaddict #bibliophile

Lydia goes missing . . . and her parents have no true idea of the life she lived before she vanished. Nathan, her brother, knows that their parents' perceptions of her life are wrong. Hannah, the youngest, always the watchful child, has noticed the miniscule details that express the feelings they all hide away. Marilyn and James slowly learn more and more about their daughter's life, and understand her better in death than they ever did when she was alive. 💧 Here's the story of a Chinese-American family, one of never-spoken-about histories that involve too-real pain, secrets, and a lack of communication. Celeste Ng gives us the raw authenticity of a dysfunctional family that does not outwardly label itself as one. Every family member has unspoken thoughts and secrets, and Lydia's secrets eventually swallowed her. 💧 Hannah, often neglected, silently watches her family as the dysfunction presents itself boldly. Nathan, bullied for his Chinese heritage like his father was, is angry and targets Jack, a secret of Lydia's kept from her parents. James, their father, finds a sinful but comforting outlet, and Marilyn, their mother, grows fearful and tries desperately to understand her daughter in death. 💧 Celeste Ng has written this book in such a way that as I was reading, it was as though I were watching a movie, scene by scene, transitioning smoothly in my mind. It's graceful and subtle, and would make a powerful movie. 💧 "Before that she hadn't realized how fragile happiness was, how if you were careless, you could knock it over and shatter it." 💧 #infinitelikebooksinspace #bookstagram #bookgram #bookphotography #bookstagrammer #bookdragon #booknerd #bookaholic #bibliophile #everythinginevertoldyou #celesteng #chineseamerican #diversityinliterature #family #familydynamics #bookreview #familydysfunction #book3 #readingdecathlon #imbehind #infiniteread #bookstagramfeature #diversebooks #diversityinliterature
