The Best Instagram Snaps of Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

“Don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

I have a confession to make: I’ve never read Margaret Atwood‘s The Handmaid’s Tale. *Gasp* I know, I know! The thing is, though, it was never required reading when I was in high school or in my undergrad. Okay, one more confession: I own not one but two copies of the book, and they’ve been sitting on my shelf for over two years now. In spite of your pitchfork-ready protests, I’ve feigned interest in reading classics; honestly, I am not a fan. (Yeah, I was one of those English majors.) But for now, I might just bask in the shuddering glory that is Hulu‘s recent revitalization of Atwood’s alarming tale, which premieres today (April 26). Will you?

About The Handmaid’s Tale:

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…

"I believe in the resistance as I believe there can be no light without shadow; or rather, no shadow unless there is also light." – Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale ▪️ . . Today's the day!! The new @hulu adaptation is online and I'm terrified to watch it. Not that I don't think it will be faithful to the book–the trailers look amazing–but I feel it's going to hit too close to home. Could anyone have guessed just how relevant this would be? Aside from just the constant, never ending battle for fucking normal health/reproductive rights, we're constantly fighting to maintain or basic civil rights under the current administration. If my money disappears overnight, you can bet your ass the husband and I will be hightailing it to Canada ASAP. ▪️ . How beautiful is this hardcover edition? My friend gifted it to me yesterday, after a particularly rough day, and it was the perfect pick me up. It's a 1986 edition, the year after the novel was published. I'm feeling a reread coming on. ▪️ . . . #ReadWomen2017 ▪️ . . . . . #bibliophile #bookaholic #booklover #bookstagram #bookphotography #bookworm #bookish #bookaddict #bookporn #igreads #aesthetics #booknerd #feminist #feminism #nastywomen #feministasfuck #shepersisted #intersectionalfeminist #resisterhood #womensmarch #womensrights #margaretatwood #handmaidstale #thehandmaidstale #coffee #coffeelover #coffeegram #latteart #coffeetime

May/June book – The Handmaid's Tale by @oursharedshelf 📚❤ Excited about this one! ——————————– In Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships, Offred's persistent memories of life in the 'time before' and her will to survive are acts of rebellion. In this multi-award-winning, bestselling novel, Margaret Atwood has created a stunning Orwellian vision of the near future. This is the story of Offred, one of the unfortunate 'Handmaids' under the new social order who have only one purpose: to breed. . . . . #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #bookaddict #bookaholic #booksarelife #readingismyescape #readingnook #thehandmaidstale #margaretatwood #dystopia #feminism #authors #bookclub #goodreads #bookclubstagram #socialissues #womenempowerment #stories #words #pages #womenwhoread #oursharedshelf

. . . #damızlıkkızınöyküsü #damizlikkizinoykusu #thehandmaidstale #gilead #margaretatwood #doğankitap #offred #bookstagram #instabook #bookworm #kitapkurdu #okudukcabuyurinsan #vscobook #vscocam #vsco #bookphotography #kitaplariyikivar #dogankitap #buchlesen #bücherliebe #kitapyorumu

"Nolite te bastardes carborundorum. Don't let the bastards grind you down.". . Happy #SockSunday everyone! I'm SO excited to finally be able to cross The Handmaid's Tale off my TBR list! It's been on there for aaaaages and every time someone asks if I've ever read it, I'm like, "Nooo but I'm getting on it, I swear!" *repeat for ten years*. . But ha! I've read it! And I'm happy to say it didn't disappoint, especially since I'm not a big dystopian reader. It did leave me a bit unsatisfied, however not in a bad way. There's also something about Margaret Atwood's writing that just drew me in. I wanted/needed to know what happened in the end! She has a way of keeping your attention, even if you weren't interested within the first few pages. You got me, Atwood! And of course, this book was banned in several school districts across the States because of its explicit sexual content, satirical religious views, defamatory statements, etc. It's also one of the most banned/challenged books in the last 30 years 😥 Keep em' busy, Margaret!. . Have you read it? What did you think? And has anyone seen the new Hulu show?. . — #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaddict #bookworm #booklove #booklover #bookish #booknerdigans #booknerd #books #bookcommunity #bookdragon #bookporn #bibliofeed #bibliophile #goodreads #readingislife #readingissexy #vscobooks #dystopian #thehandmaidstale #margaretatwood #bookswornwell
