Sneak Peek: Lights Reveals First Pages of Forthcoming ‘Skin & Earth’ Comic Book

Nerdist Industries

The Canadian pop star is giving more spotlight to her new comic book project, Skin & Earth.

On May 5, Lights paired with Nerdist Industries to present her watchers with an exclusive sneak peek at the first issue of Skin & Earth. In Chapter One: Intro, readers are introduced to our redheaded protagonist, Enania Jin (“En” for short), whom we learn is a student at Tempest University, an institution that may or may not be rearing its students to become standing guards or soldiers of some kind.

We learn almost immediately that En is nothing like her other classmates. She sports a bandaged mask that distinguishes her from the other civilians, which is common to denizens of the Pink Sector, which En is presumably home to. The sector’s scene is so ghastly, so aberrant that it almost looks like a wasteland, its inhabitants like zombies. Of course, I could be misunderstanding all this. Then again, it’s only, like, a handful of pages to work with, which is not enough for anyone to make assumptions.

Also, can we just take a minute to acknowledge the drawings—illustrated by Lights herself—because they were phenomenally done! I can totally imagine the little dystopia she’s created being akin to Divergent. Singer, song-writer, illustrator: The woman is TALENTED. Still, I cannot wait to hear the new music that’s supposed to follow future issue releases.

Nonetheless, to spare any confusion or misinterpretation, I’ve included the exclusive excerpt from Skin & Earth below [via Nerdist]. But from what I’ve read so far, Lights’ series may be a really fun read. Not to mention the world within it is so fucked up it makes it so that you really want to know what the fuck is going on.

I’ll let you be the judge.

Originally posted on April 18Last month, Alternative Press reported the Dynamite Entertainment-produced Skin & Earth will hit the Internet first sometime this month; then in comic book stores on July 12; and finally, the “Meteorites” singer will follow through with the new record of the same name in the fall. That same day, the gifted chanteuse bestowed anxious fans with a much-awaited mini clip teasing the backstory behind the comic book for her forthcoming project. In the teaser, the scarlet starlet, reimagined as her animated alter ego, En, walks battle-ready in the streets of what appears to be a deserted post-apocalyptic town.

Apparently, the series will follow En as she pushes through the dark and perilous world before her, and gets tangled in “romances, and cults, gods, and mortals” along the way.

On what Lights has to say about her latest creative endeavor:

I feel my whole life has lead up to a project like this. It’s a complete convergence of everything I love – music, comics, post-apocalyptic romance, crystals, wine and powerful ladies, all perfectly entwined. It’ll be by far my most care-free and fierce album yet. I think now, more than ever, people need a reason to listen to a whole record, and this is mine.

While the record won’t be hitting shelves for several months, fellow Lights fans like myself will not have to wait much longer for new tunes. Evidently, with every volume release of Skin & Earth, there will also be a track from the album to accompany it, PopCrush reported April 18.

What do you think of the first excerpt of Skin & Earth?

Will you be grabbing the issue once it releases? Let us know!
