Even though it was only released this July, Rachel Khong‘s novel Goodbye, Vitamin has quickly garnered a reputation as essential summer reading. Vogue even called it the best book you’ll read this summer—no small feat, considering this is Khong’s debut novel after all.

About Goodbye, Vitamin:

Goodbye, Vitamin follows 30-something Ruth as she moves back home to care for her father, who has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Her return to the suburbs of Los Angeles also coincides with a wrenching breakup—she is cheated on and then unceremoniously dumped by a man she dropped out of college to be with—and the book traces her journey as she discovers what it means to become a caretaker to those who once cared for you.

We’ve collected some of the best Instagram posts featuring Goodbye, Vitamin, which in addition to being a sensational novel also boasts a beautiful cover!

"What imperfect carriers of love we are, and what imperfect givers." –Rachel Khomeini, Goodbye, Vitamin (Sometimes I just need a book I can pick up and get through quickly–like this one. I loved Goodbye, Vitamin! Told in journal format, about a daughter who comes home to help take care of her father who's suffering from Alzheimer's, Goodbye, Vitamin was funny–so funny that some of the things that were happening or what people were doing almost lost me. Almost. But Ruth had an interesting perspective on life, for sure. This humor made a book with a difficult topic so fun to read! Beautiful yet heartbreaking to see daughter and dad switch roles at the end. A four and a half star read for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) #bookofthemonthclub #books #hotcocoareads #bookreview #bookreviews #rachelkhong #goodbyevitamin #bookoftheday #igbooks #igreads #contemporaryfiction #alwaysreading #readmorebooks #booklove #bookworms #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #bookandbreakfast #bookandflowers #bookphotos #botmmember #goodreads #ilovereading #bookbabesjuly #summerread

We couldn't say it better: Repost @theloudlibrarylady ・・・ 🍋💊🍋💊🍋/ 5 ~ Heartfelt and dryly hilarious, GOODBYE, VITAMIN takes readers into the life of Ruth for a year as she returns home at age 30 to help care for her father who is losing his memory. My heart ached for the entire family, but just as I was starting to descend into despair, all of a sudden there would be a phrase or scene so witty or shocking that I would find myself laughing out loud. Khong manages to write about a truly horrible situation, and one almost any of us could find ourselves in, with brevity, brutal honesty, and hope. •*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•* GOODBYE, VITAMIN is written diary style, but also includes segments of a journal of Ruth's father about her as a child, and at times she is also writing TO her father. It was a delight to read about such identifiable and mundane moments (postal service-related fears, for example!) in the midst of the anguish over Alzheimer's. •*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•* There is grief in abundance in this book, but humor and heartwarming anecdotes and events balance it out. Highly, highly recommend. I can't wait to read more from @rrrrrrrachelkhong ❤️ •*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•* @henryholtbooks @bookofthemonthclub #bookofthemonth #goodbyevitamin #rachelkhong #bookoftheday

I finished Goodbye, Vitamin 💊 in one sitting and I wish it hadn't ended. It took me about 20 pages to get used to the narrative style and once I did, I fell in love with Ruth and her damaged yet loving family. Highly recommend!! Thanks to Rachel Khong for writing this story. I won't be forgetting these characters any time soon. 🍋 • • I read a review online about how disappointing the ending was and I'd have to disagree. If you've ever read a novel with this theme or know someone with the disease, you know how it ends. But it's not about how the disease takes hold of the person, it's about fighting to honor the person you love. I'm honestly glad to have read a book outside of the normal parameters built around themes like this. • • #goodbyevitamin #rachelkhong #henryholt #alzheimers #novel #literature #books #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #bookaddict #bibliophile #instaread #instabook #bookphotography #bookart #tea #goodmorning #bookishallure #bookstagram #bookaholic
