Rainbow Rowell is known for her well-crafted romances in both the young adult and adult fiction spheres – from Landline to Fangirl to Eleanor & Park. Any new work from her is a treat, and Pumpkinheads is no exception.
Where Pumpkinheads differs is that it is Rowell’s debut graphic novel. Although Rowell is certainly not a newcomer to the world of graphic novels, as she is currently writing Marvel’s Runaways reboot (which is a treat on its own), Pumkpinheads is an original story about friendship and relationships that will be brought to life by working directly with illustrator, Faith Erin Hicks.
Illustrated in full color and written as a collaborative effort, Rowell has crafted the story to fit Hicks’ style and the graphic novel medium.
Panels from the most recent batch of Pumpkinheads pages! I'm really chuffed by how this book is coming out, I feel like I'm firing on all artistic cylinders, is that a thing? @rainbowrowell @01FirstSecond #pumpkinheads pic.twitter.com/oPzvZ4LgyB

Following two high school seniors, Deja and Josiah, who only see each other for a few short months out of the year, Rowell and Hicks’ upcoming work is set to follow the last year at the pumpkin patch, wherein the teenagers presumably become more than friends.
Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.
Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.
But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.
Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .
What if their last shift was an adventure?
The cover of Pumpkinheads, which is absolutely stunning and captures Deja and Josiah, was revealed by Entertainment Weekly, along with a release date of August 27, 2019.
