It’s the YA adaptation you’ve all been waiting for, literally.
After six years in the making, the much-awaited trailer for Jay Asher‘s highly acclaimed young adult novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, is FINALLY hitting the small screen once and for all.
On Wednesday, January 25, executive producer Selena Gomez—who’s been diligently molding the upcoming miniseries since 2011—shared a snippet clip on Instagram of her “passion project” she’s been working on: a 13-episode miniseries on Netflix adapted from Asher’s praised novel.
Are you ready for 13 Reasons Why?!
13 Reasons Why recounts the short-lived and rather grim existence of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), whom we learn has ended her life for reasons unknown. That’s until Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), one of Hannah’s classmates and secret admirer, comes across a mysterious package on his porch addressed to him, which encapsulates Hannah in her final days. In the form of several cassette tapes, Hannah details all 13 reasons why she claimed her life. One of those being Clay.
In case you were unaware, it was reported back in 2011 that Gomez was expected to play title starring role of Hannah Baker in the series. However, the actress-singer has opted to take the executive route by stepping behind the camera for the project—a fine choice on her part.
Not trying to shade her or anything, but I’ve never really considered Gomez an “actress” by any means. Albeit I’ve never watched a single movie or television show she’s starred in, but I think she’s more or less established herself as a pretty dominant pop star than an actress. But by the looks of the sneak peek of the series, Gomez might have found her calling in the producer’s chair as well. IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD!
I first purchased 13 Reasons Why in 2009 or something, after graduating high school—in an unlikely era when I actually considered young adult the only kind of literature worth reading—though I never did read it entirely. I faintly remember getting half-way through the book and stopping all together because I despised Clay’s constant insufferable culpability. I also remember selling it to a local 2nd & Charles years later. Little did I know—as fate and the YA powers of the world would have it—it reappeared early last year when I found it (again) at Salvation Army. It was 25 cents. It was mine.
While I’ve yet to knock the dust off, I always get that familiar itch for reading books before they become movies or television shows. To be honest, I forgot the series was being made into a small screen production because it’s taken them so damn long to do something with it. I guess waiting 10 years for something to happen does that to a person.
