Sylvain Neuvel‘s Themis Files series is coming to a close with the latest edition to the giant robot saga, Only Human. While the third and final novel is tentatively expected to release in May of 2018, a recent interview with The Verge has given fans a taste of what’s to come in Neuvel’s latest novel, along with a look at the beautiful new cover.

The novels, which rely on the use of non-traditional narratives, touch on themes of research and discovery. Beginning with Sleeping Giants, the series revolves around the discovery and use of a massive robot, deemed the artifact. As the research team composed of a physicist, linguist, geneticist, and two military pilots begin to uncover the pieces behind an ancient alien technology, the repercussions are incredibly dangerous. From destroying city blocks in the search for the missing pieces of the robot to a close call with North Korea, a lot happens in a (seemingly) short amount of time.
Sylvain was generous enough to show us what lies underneath the dust jacket!
Thank you! Here's what's hiding under the dust jacket. How cool is that? pic.twitter.com/67qOZMK3kr

While the plot of Only Human remains a mystery, Neuvel’s recent interview reveals that there will once again be a large gap between novels, spanning nine years. Furthermore, while this will be the final novel in the series, meaning no cliffhangers, it does not mean that this is the end of the world as we know it.
There’s a nine-year gap between the end of Waking Gods and the beginning of Only Human — the same amount of time that went by between the first and second books. There are a couple reasons for the jumps. First, I wanted the Themis Files to feel real — as real as a giant robot story can, anyway — and that meant my characters had to have some kind of ordinary existence beyond the events of the books.
Despite knowing very little about the final novel in the series, other than the fact that it will follow Sleeping Giants and Waking Gods in format and development, the synopsis indicates that there will be more internal conflict and destruction.
In her childhood, Rose Franklin accidentally discovered a giant metal hand buried beneath the ground outside Deadwood, South Dakota. As an adult, Dr. Rose Franklin led the team that uncovered the rest of the body parts which together form Themis: a powerful robot of mysterious alien origin. She, along with linguist Vincent, pilot Kara, and the unnamed Interviewer, protected the Earth from geopolitical conflict and alien invasion alike. Now, after nearly ten years on another world, Rose returns to find her old alliances forfeit and the planet in shambles. And she must pick up the pieces of the Earth Defense Corps as her own friends turn against each other.
As Sleeping Giants is easily one of my favorite books of all time due to the unique storytelling and incredible character and world building, it’s safe to say that I will finally be picking up the second novel in the series. Although I was initially on the fence about purchasing it, because I have more than enough to read already, I will be picking up Waking Gods as soon as possible following the recent announcement for Only Human.
